Extensions is an autonomous group of embroiderers under the umbrella of the Association of NZ Embroiderers' Guilds (Inc). It consists of both formal and informal area groups as well as individuals throughout New Zealand. Extensions members seek to challenge both themselves through exploration of their embroidery and presenting it into the wider art world. They experiment with new materials, or new ways with old materials, using stitch to convey their vision, statement or mood. This is all with the emphasis of good design. For a subscription of $20.00 for two years, members receive the Extensions newsletter with reports of group activities, new products or publications, tutors, upcoming exhibitions, etc. Extensions also has periodic challenges and/or exhibitions to showcase members' talents. A special Extensions Day is always incorporated into the ANZEG Biennial Conference. Members are treated to a fun day with invited guest speakers, tours or forums, each one quite different. Things to spark ideas or just the chance to interact with like-minded people. Extensions is for anyone who would like to challenge themselves and follow their own path using stitch. Members interpreted the theme in many exciting and creative ways, proving once again stitch is one of the most versatile mediums in which to work. (Scroll to bottom of page to view some of the exhibits.) Exhibitions, of course, don't happen by themselves and we thank Wendy Johnstone and her small band of volunteers for all their time and effort in organising, taking entries and setting up `Off the Wall'. Extensions groups around New Zealand have begun planning and meeting for the year. There are many exciting events and challenges being outlined for groups and this a great way of extending ourselves with technique and design. Challenges range from design ideas to interpretations of a single stitch. Some Extensions groups are also having displays of their own so make sure you catch them. These will not only show finished pieces but workbooks and inspiration to show how everyone is able to extend themselves. It can be a great way to get your own creative juices flowing. Ask yourself questions like: would I have used the same stitch? colour? what if I used another part of the original? repeated a portion? The possibilities are endless and an excellent way to begin to EXTEND your own designs. What are you waiting for?
